The Am haZikaron Institute reconstructs one of the most important episodes of Jewish history and invites you on a journey through the glorious past. A full immersion into the atmosphere of the Maccabees, Jewish warriors who led a revolt against Seleucid rule in the 2nd century BCE.

As it is known, Antiochus IV Epiphanes conducted the policy directed on Hellenization of Judea, forbade rites, cult practices, ruined the Second Temple and arranged there an altar to the Olympic Zeus. In 164 BC the army under Judas Maccabeus liberated Jerusalem, the Temple was cleansed from defilement and on 25 Kislev the solemn ceremony of the newly consecrated Temple took place. It was this day that became the annual festival of Hanukkah, celebrated with the lighting of candles. As a result, an independent Hasmonean kingdom was established, which lasted for almost a century until the Roman conquest. Thus, the Maccabees not only liberated their land from Hellenistic oppression, but also laid the foundations of a national consciousness that inspires subsequent generations.

The “Maccabees Village” project provides an opportunity to plunge into the history, which is more than 2000 years old, to live a few hours of daily life of their ancestors – Jews of the Maccabees period.

Participants will dress in ancient Jewish clothing. They will grind grain on stone hand mills, make olive oil and wine. They will become familiar with the ancient Hebrew alphabet. They may even use it to write their names from mosaic pieces, and take part in archery and javelin throwing competitions. They will be taught how to mint ancient coins. Finally, they will visit a shelter cave and a stone building from the Maccabean period.

This unforgettable day will help participants develop an interest and respect for their own history, Jewish values and traditions, and strengthen their self-identity. It is for these values, traditions and identity that the Jews under the leadership of the Maccabees fought.
